Some judgements and possibilities to increase quality

and cost-effectiveness in Slovenian pig production

ABSTRACT

Slovenian pig production has, before EU membership, an opportunity to increase quality and cost-effectiveness. Structure improvements in pig production on farms and the increase of self-sufficiency are significant, as presented in the article. This will decrease traffic with pigs and could cause higher probability of better health condition in pig population in Slovenia. Higher intensity in pig production is possible with the higher number of piglets born per sow per year, with decreased losses and increased daily gain. The quality of pig carcasses is being analysed. When selling hogs the oriented selling and the system "all in, successive out" has to be introduced. There is a warning on how the national selection program and cross-breeding program are implemented, to prevent inbreeding and to improve the quality of meat on farms. Important is technical training of breeders and experts and adaptation to the legislation.
